Angela Fraleigh (born 1976) is a contemporary American artist. Her oil and mixed media paintings explore themes such as gender, sexuality, femininity, and power dynamics, in a style that weaves together realism, abstraction, and classical influences. Fraleigh works primarily as a painter, although she has exhibited artworks in additional mediums, including drawing and sculpture. Her painting process often involves a balance between control and chance. Fraleigh’s process involves rendering the figures using a traditional and academic approach, then placing the canvas horizontally, and introducing the element of chance by pouring of mediums over the surface of the painting.
Most of Fraleigh’s paintings are figurative, depicting forms that are often obscured by abstract areas of color causing the figures to exist in an abstract or flattened space. Heavily influenced by literature and narrative structure, narrative has become the focus of Fraleigh’s more recent bodies of work. In her recent paintings, Fraleigh reexamines classic female nude figures from Baroque and Rococo paintings. By creating a new painted environment and context for the female figures, appropriated from old masterworks, a new identity and importance that is no longer dependent upon their objectification or submissiveness, is applied.
Fraleigh earned her MFA from Yale University and her BFA from Boston University. She has exhibited widely at numerous venues including the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, TX. Fraleigh was awarded the Yale University Alice Kimball English Travel Grant as well as several international artist-in-residence programs, including the CORE program, MFAH, TX, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE and Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium. She lives and works in New York, NY.
