Peters Projects of Santa Fe is pleased to announce Hello Mao, an exhibition of mixed media work by Keiko Fukazawa, the artist’s first exhibition in Santa Fe.
Japanese-born Fukazawa’s artwork addresses issues of global consumerism, cultural politics, and the environment -- all with a sense of playful humor. Much of the work in Hello Mao is the result of an artist residency at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, an ancient city known as the “Porcelain Capital”. Fukazawa has secured the residency three times, offering her the opportunity to work with craftspeople highly trained in the use of porcelain in the Chinese tradition.
Chinese political history and popular culture serve as a major influence in Fukazawa’s work. Parodying the Japanese icon designed by Yuko Shimizu in 1975 Hello Kitty, Fukazawa has titled her exhibition Hello Mao which explores the lasting cultural influence of Mao Zedong, the former Chairman of the Communist Party of China. Fukazawa incorporates historic imagery of Chairman Mao along with highly recognizable images of popular culture and high-end product logos to underscore the conflict of interest between socioeconomic conservatism and the current obsession with consumerism.
Keiko Fukazawa was born in Japan and studied at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, and Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. She is currently an associate professor and head of the ceramics department at Pasadena City College. She has permanent collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the National Museum of History in Taipei, Taiwan; and the Racine Art Museum in Racine, WI. She is the recipient of the 2016 COLA Fellowship Grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs in Los Angeles, and the 2015 recipient of the Asian Cultural Council Artist-in-Residency Grant in New York, NY.
The exhibition will be on view March 23 through May 25, 2018, with an opening reception on Friday, March 23 from 5-7pm.
